A small plane hit the back of a pickup truck as it made an emergency landing on Bayshore Road in North Fort Myers on Saturday. No one was hurt, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

North Fort Myers is about seven miles north of Fort Myers, across the Caloosahatchee River. The landing happened on Bayshore Road near Interstate 75.

What the sheriff’s office said

The sheriff’s office released the details in a statement. Fox 13 and CBS12 both carried the statement, and CBS12 quoted the sheriff word for word. According to the sheriff’s office:

  • the aircraft was a Cessna 172D
  • two pilots were aboard
  • they had a mechanical issue and tried to land on the road
  • the plane struck the rear of a pickup truck heading east on Bayshore Road
  • no injuries were reported
  • the Federal Aviation Administration is the lead agency and will take over the investigation

“Thankfully, this incident had a positive outcome, and no one was injured,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. “Given the recent tragic news involving aviation accidents, we are especially grateful that everyone is safe.”

The sheriff’s office has not said what mechanical problem the pilots had. It has not said where the flight began or where it was going.
